Air conditioning is increasingly seen as an essential comfort need, especially for the elderly, children and the vulnerable. Here are the most commonly used air conditioning systems in Quebec.
Wall-mounted air conditioner (wall-mounted heat pump)
Very popular in single-family homes and condos. Effective for heating in winter and cooling in summer. Two in one: air conditioner in summer, auxiliary (or main!) heating in winter. Ideal for homes without air ducts.
Highly energy-efficient, this air conditioner consumes less electricity than an electric baseboard heater for equivalent performance. ENERGY STAR models offer excellent seasonal performance. Easy to install, it requires no major modifications and is perfect for homes, condos, cottages or apartments. It offers precise control by remote control or mobile app (Wi-Fi integrated on many models).
Approximate cost
Between $3,000 and $6,000 (including installation), depending on brand, power and number of indoor units. Subsidies are regularly available from the provincial and federal governments, as well as Hydro-Québec, to help reduce your bill.
Central air conditioner
A high-end solution for uniform comfort throughout the home. Ideal for homes with existing air ducts.
Discreet and silent, the central air conditioner is hidden in the ventilation system, so no wall or window units are visible. What’s more, they offer centralized (and intelligent!) control with a single thermostat, or with multiple thermostats divided into zones for more advanced systems. Many models are compatible with home automation or mobile apps. This type of system is also highly appreciated for the quality of the air it generates indoors. Air circulates through HEPA or electrostatic filters, depending on the system.
Approximate cost
Between $6,000 and $10,000 (installation included). Prices vary according to system capacity, complexity of existing ductwork or ductwork to be modified, brand and energy efficiency.
Portable or window air conditioners
This type of air conditioner is an affordable, temporary solution for apartments.
Whether portable (on wheels) or window-mounted, it draws warm air indoors, cools it, and rejects the heat outdoors. It requires no permanent installation, is easy to move and requires no window modifications. It offers good performance for a small or medium-sized room, and some models are ENERGY TAR, making them more economical.
Approximate cost
Between $200 and $600, and a good choice if you can’t install a wall-mounted model.
